Substance Abuse issues in teens and adults are often complex and can present a lot of challenges for professionals. Substance Abuse issues are often interwoven with mental health and legal issues and can complicate our work with clients. In this MI Booster Training, we will practice specific Motivational Interviewing strategies that help engage and motivate clients with substance abuse issues. We will share successful strategies from our nonprofit substance abuse prevention/intervention program “Natural Highs – Healthy Alternatives to Drugs & Alcohol” that is built on Motivational Interviewing where we have gathered lots of wisdom from teens and adults in what is inspiring teens and adults to get interested and passionate about healthy lifestyle choices. You can look forward to lots of real-life examples of how Motivational Interviewing can help us feel confident and skilled in supporting clients around substance abuse issues.

Attendees will:

• Get updated on new developments in the field of substance abuse & addiction treatment

• Learn what approaches and communication styles work for teens & adults with substance abuse issues

• Develop specific communication skills you can implement to engage your client in more positive ways

• Use MI Skills to balance rapport building with boundary setting and accountability

Presenter: Avani G. Dilger, MEd, MA, LPC, BC-DMT, CAC III, ADS

Avani is a Licensed Professional Counselor, a Certified Addiction Counselor, a Somatic Psychotherapist, an Acupuncture Detoxification Specialist, and a Motivational Interviewing Trainer (MINT), who specializes in substance abuse prevention and treatment with adults, teens and their families. She is the founder and director of the “Natural Highs – Healthy Alternatives to Drugs & Alcohol” nonprofit program, an innovative, grassroots substance abuse prevention and intervention program that teaches teens to become leaders around healthier lifestyles and positive peer culture. In addition to teaching the Natural Highs program at several high schools in Boulder and at Naropa University, Avani works as a psychotherapist with teens, families and adults with substance abuse, addiction and trauma using Motivational Interviewing, Somatic Psychotherapy, Brainspotting and Systemic Constellationwork. She is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) and trains Motivational Interviewing for criminal justice, mental health, and substance abuse professionals.
