An Overview of VA Resources for Veterans - What Human Service Providers Need to Know

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is a cabinet level agency with three distinct administrations-Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) and the National Cemetery Administration NCA).

This training will provide a general overview of the many benefits for eligible Veterans and their family members from the Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) such as:

• service related monthly compensation
  
• non-service related pension 
  
• dependent/ survivor benefits
  
• fiduciary services
  
• burial and memorial benefits
  
• life insurance
  
• GI Bill education benefits
  
• home loan guaranty program, and the 
  
• Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment program
  

VBA works closely with the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) to ensure service members are receiving benefits once they are discharged from the service through the pre-discharge program. Veterans can check their claim by using eBenefits and can use the new easier claim forms. VBA has Women Veterans Coordinator and Military Sexual Trauma (MST) Coordinators at the Denver Regional Office and at the PFC Floyd K. Lindstrom Clinic in Colorado Springs; and works closely with VHA’s Coordinators.

Presenter: Terrie L. Hillig 

Terrie Linn Hillig began her Federal Government career in 1982 with the Department of the Air Force.  She worked for the Department of Air Force from 1982 through 1993.  Ms. Hillig worked for the Department of Defense (DOD) from 1993 through 2001.

Ms. Hillig has served as a Legal Administrative Specialist at the Denver VA Regional Office since June 2014.  Ms. Hillig began her VA career as a Human Resources Personnel Assistance from 2001 through 2004.   She served as a Veteran Service Representative (VSR) from 2004 through 2014. 

Ms. Hillig is currently the Denver VA Regional Office Faith Based Outreach Coordinator,   Denver VA Regional Office Casualty Outreach Coordinator, and Denver VA Regional Office Women’s Veteran’s Outreach Coordinator.
