This workshop will inform participants about aging in place through a safe, care-managed, home-sharing model that generates income and assistance for seniors while accessing untapped affordable housing for home seekers. This is program where two or more unrelated people share a home or apartment. Each has their own room, though they typically share common areas. Matches are based on common needs, interests, and preferences. Each match is unique.

Through this program seniors:

  • Earn extra income;
  • Receive help with household chores when needed;
  • Remain safely in their home longer;
  • Friends and family can feel secure knowing they are not alone;
  • Give back by providing affordable housing to someone in need;
  • Receive assistance with transportation and errands; and
  • Enjoy companionship.

Home seekers benefit from:

  • Accessing an affordable housing solution;
  • Enabling a senior to remain in their home by trading discounted rent in exchange for household chores;
  • Building lasting relationships and decreasing social isolation.

Come learn how you can leverage the benefits of this program for your own clients.

Presenter: Alison Joucovsky  Alison has been working in the field of aging for over 25 years in mental health, community organizing, care management, and program development. She is the graduate of The Ohio State University with a degree in Human Services and Gerontology and has her Masters from University of Northern Colorado in Counseling Psychology.

Sunshine Home Share Colorado (aka Sunshine), was founded in 2015 by Alison Joucovsky, licensed geriatric care manager, is leading the way in aging-in-place solutions for seniors in Colorado. With 25 years of experience as a senior advocate and aging-in-community program director, Joucovsky’s concern over how to meet the needs of our skyrocketing senior population, which is expected to live longer and more independently than previous generations, crystallized into an innovative solution that is modeled after successful home share efforts around the country. Joucovsky’s own research of 65 programs nationally and input from two local area focus groups led to SHSC’s formation. Sunshine is the only nonprofit home sharing program in the state that specifically targets seniors over age 55.

After establishing the organization as a 501(c)(3) public charity in 2015, Alison and her team of committed volunteers spent 2016 testing the program design, seeking input from program participants, families and community organizations to make modifications to ensure successful matches. The organization receives a generous in-kind donation of office space from the Dominican Home Health Agency. Sunshine is currently working to build capacity through funding, community partnerships, marketing and outreach, etc., as it implements its first shared housing matches.

Eligible for one hour CEU.
